I thought it high time I do some sort of random, occasional waffle regarding the state of JoeK Minis and try to attempt a start at talking about what on earth Odyssey is! Which might be helpful, what with the launch of Hephaestus really ;)
So, the first half of this year was dominated by Trolls of Trudvang Kickstarter (what, you missed it? Go and have a look. I'll wait...
Read it? Jolly good!).
The KS got funded, and some trolls zoomed out to various nice folk, all in good time and all within budget. Everyone was happy.
Or were they?
I have to admit to just feeling relief when I'd sent out the last Troll set. Not that I wasn't very proud of what I'd done - being able to produce a figure based on one of my favourite artist's works was great. And I think I did it pretty well! The reviews and feedback seem to suggest I did the artwork proud. Yet, it's always much harder to recreate existing works than it is to do something for yourself, and the main reason is that you've got to keep folk happy - namely the folk who own the work! Thankfully, I did keep them happy but it takes a lot of emails back and forth to get approval!
I decided that I don't want to go that route again.
Odyssey is the result! Or, rather, Odyssey will be the result! It's been a germ of an idea for long time - way before thoughts of trolls ever came into my head - but I'd never done much about it. But all the way through the Kickstarter, this idea started to grow and grow until I just had to do something about it. So, I had a chat with a good friend of mine - who happens to be a rather fantastic writer too (handy!) - and we started getting things down on paper.
We've got a lot to do, and a long way to go before I start giving major details about the project, but in a nutshell Odyssey is this:
Greek Mythology transposed into the far, far, faaaar future. Mixed with the great western film the Magnificent Seven. Or if you prefer - the Seven Samurai. The choice is yours on that one.
I decided I wanted to take time doing it - no rush, no deadlines, just get things done when they're done. If we do get to a point where a game could be released, well so be it!
So, the idea is to get concept art started, and to help fund the ongoing art and ideas to do small scale releases of eventual sculpts, of which Hephaestus is the first. I think it's safe to say I'm thoroughly pleased with him! The concept art from Roberto Cirillo was just perfect, and Robby Crawforth's sculpt was as close to the art as I think is possible.
I can honestly say it's my favourite figure in the entire JoeK Mini range :D
But I do need you to help support the project. If you like it enough to buy one (or two :p) then that's wonderful. The proceeds go back into the pot to develop more figures. If you can't buy, but like the project enough to support it by word of mouth, then that's wonderful too! I'll take all the help I can get!
In any case, I thank everyone who supports me and this little business I run. It's still fun!
Over the weeks and months I'll start getting more and more specific with details for Odyssey - but it's safe to say it takes up a lot of my free time. I think it could be a pretty darn good range of figures!
Hope some of you think so too!
All the best,
